Fundamentals of Digital Design, American University of Sharjah, School of Architecture + Design. Fall 2009

Fundamentals of Digital Design was a digital design seminar focused on developing students’ abilities to make use of digital tools for design. The course was broken down into two major sections. The first section focusing on 3d modeling, in which students learned to use the Rhino modeling software. The second section focused on the use of animation tools for design, rendering, and presentation. During this phase students learned to use the Autodesk 3ds Max animation software, as well as the basics of Adobe After Effects. The semester was treated as one extended project broken into two parts. During the first phase students modeled one organic object or creature, and one synthetic/man-made object. During the second phase students were required to create a transformative animation using the organic and synthetic models. During this process audio was introduced as a mediator. Students first modeled the objects then, while in the process of learning the animation tools chose a piece audio to aid in the choreography of the transformation.
