The Broadway Shuffle. New York, NY

The Wagon is a significant set of photographs for me because it was the first time I'd picked up a camera with any intent of making a compelling image; whether or not that actually happened is debatable. A great friend gave me an incredible gift while I was enrolled in an intro to photography course. I’d received my first camera, or cameras rather; a Pentax K1000 and Pentax KMax, which I still own and use occasionally. It was like a revelation, discovering all of the different components and factors that went into capturing a moment on film, and the darkroom processes associated with them. These images are shot in New York City and at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture. The title signifies a condition that I’d generally identified in these places. In a fast paced, competitive environment I’d felt as though as a society we were all in one big shaky wagon, some trying not fall off, others having enough control to steer it, and some already left behind. These photos explore those ideas and represent my earliest explorations in photography.
